The History of the Standard Oil Company Unexpurgated Edition Halcyon Classics eBook Ida M Tarbell Reviews
This is an abbreviated version of Tarbell's original History of the Standard Oil Company, written in 1903 and later edited by David Chambers in 1968. While thoroughly researched, the book is so full of tedious details and repetitions that it is difficult to keep track of who did what to whom. The overall messages are (1) the Standard organization was set up to create a monopoly by illegal means, (2) at the turn of the century corruption was widespread in the US at many levels of business, in the Congress and in the judiciary, (3) the Standard Oil organization under the leadership of John D. Rockefeller became the most successful and efficient corporation in the world. Since the Standard Oil Trust had already been broken up before the writing of the book it would have been useful if Mr. Chambers, in his introduction, had informed the reader what happened to the Standard Oil Company after Tarbell published her account. What was the result of her detailed investigation?
This book is difficult to read because (or 's contractor) did not bother to have a human proofread the text after it was scanned by a computer. Characters are changed from one letter (or number) to another; punctuation and capitalization appear in odd places; footnotes appear in the middle of the page (usually a page to two after the referenced text). I saw similar problems with a printed book that had lost its copyright protection. I will finish reading this book because the topic is interesting, but I have started reading a newer book in the meantime. My rating is for the described problems, not the book itself.
Just finished it. Difficult to read with all the typos, etc. but I guess you get what you paid for (99 cents). I would have thought it was longer than the description says (just over 200 pages). Felt longer. The style is informative but a little plodding. I also did not know it wasn't the full story - so it kind of hit the wall and died. Not sure the full text is the answer because that could be brutally long. Maybe the answer is to read Titan by Ron Chernow. I like his style very much and there will be no typos there!
This is a very nice book for anyone who would like to know a little bit of history of oil and its production and also how Standard Oil was founded and gradually became leader and monopoly of the industry. The book is written by a journalist of early 1900s and is based on a series of articles that appeared in a magazine. Of course since initially this was a journalist investigation we have to understand that at some points the story might be biased, but anyway the material of the book is very good and well-thought. What I liked about the book 1) provides a history how entire industry was created, 2) provides detailed overview how Standard Oil, first major industrial monopoly in US, appeared, 3) gives details on all fair and unfair ways of Mr Rockfeller running the company in a comprehensive manner. Could recommend to read both to specialists in oil & gas industry and people who are interested in the field.
good history of company. a little dry and perhaps the authors personal feelings are coming through a little strong. Ultimately realizing the power of an active government over devil may care capitalism and today you will find our oil markets dominated by the English, Dutch and others. Same thing with the Steel industry. Government can make the market a fairer place to compete for the benefit of foreign business
It's interesting to read through this book, adapted from the famous series of articles for McClure's magazine. It provides a very detailed history of the Standard Oil company's history from inception to the late 1890s. The author provides a strongly critical perspective, while mostly distinguishing opinion from fact.
The weakest parts of the book, for me, were the author's criticism of some of the company's practices, often stating or implying that these practices were illegal, yet also suggesting that laws should be enacted to prohibit the practices.
I was somewhat disappointed that the editor apparently focused only on "abridging" this into the "briefer version," without providing any update information about the impact this book had on the Standard Oil company and other trusts.
The absolute evil that capitalism can be is spelled out with care. There is no honor among thieves, and that includes John D. Rockefeller.. They weren't called "robber barons" for nothing.
The photocopied text is fine, the work itself is groundbreaking BUT nowhere in the advertising does this version tell that it is ONLY VOL. 1 of a two volume work.
