This Regency Era Cinderella story was a touching story with great potential. It is well written with witty supporting characters and amusing crisis situations scattered through the story. It just left me somewhat disappointed because it missed so much of the development that 'could have been'.Our heroine, Tabitha Timmons, is an orphaned daughter of a vicar living with her Aunt and Uncle. Upon her Father's death, her Uncle replaces him as the village vicar. They take horrible advantage of her custody and use her as their scullery maid and secretary. When an estranged Uncle from her Mother's side of the family passes away and bestows his fortune upon her, she suddenly becomes a pawn in a complicated web of manipulation by multiple wings of extended family.
Christopher Seton, Duke of Preston, is an utter rogue. He's disgraced several young ladies with no care for their ruin. He's apparently idle and reckless, with a long family history of scandal. His widowed Aunt and her bachelor twin brother reside with him and his fear of losing their companionship after yet another incident of his causes a scandal instigates him into considering his Aunt's declaration that he should marry to settle gossip.
The two meet casually in the village after the Duke has a carriage accident, with their initial impressions of each other being disagreeable. Miss Timmons is under the impression that the Duke is a mere Mister, so she feels free to speak her mind.
After they meet again during her journey to London, sharing a private supper at an inn, she realizes there is more to the man than she first thought. She is attracted to him and they share a kiss, but she still believes him to be a wastrel and rouge.
In London, Miss Timmons meets the man her late Uncle intended for her to marry in his will. Mr. Barkworth is a stickler for propriety and social ambition. He's also under his overbearing Mother's control.
The interactions between the three primaries are enjoyable, yet still somewhat lacking. The vulnerable yet prickly spinster from the country suddenly transforms into a beauty. While a couple weeks of good eating and a new wardrobe with personal maid will do a woman a world of good things, there was no indication of her developing transformation. I had a hard time suspending disbelief during the description of Tabitha's ballgown at her first ball. I could not fathom a country raised vicar's daughter newly arrived to London and the creme of the Ton daring to throw away her conservative values and conformity all to be at the scandalous peak of fashion.
The multiple threads of all the characters weave in and out through Tabitha and Preston's unconventional courtship. Preston's Aunt works to get him married from her list of potential brides. His Uncle is subjected to a large influx of letters from an advertisement Preston posted declaring a potential for marriage by correspondence. Preston's friend, Lord Roxley, is a scatterbrained gambler that lends assistance to the Duke with comic flair. Tabitha's friends, Daphne and Harriet, each work to push Tabitha towards the man they believe to be suited for her. Harriet sees where Tabitha's desires lay while Daphne is blinded by age old family bias against the Duke's name.
The story had so much opportunity to expand on the lead character's development. Sadly, it was tossed in as incidental rather than critical to the makeup of the person. The conclusion left me feeling a bit...forced. As if once the hero arrives to save the heroine, all is well and the book should end here, but it is emotionless and flat. The platitudes are met and the words are said, but it all left me with the impression that it was rather rote instead of heartfelt.

However, I am used to laughing more in the course of a book by Elizabeth Boyle.
The characters flowed on the pages, but without the laughter, sometimes the pages got long. On the other hand, it was easy to immerse myself in the book, and enjoy the life of someone else. It was pretty tense at times, as I was never positive the Duke would come through.
Ever since her father died three years ago Tabitha has been living with her aunt and uncle but she is more like a scullery maid then she is their niece since everyday she has a huge list of chores she has to do. Her ventures out of the house are few and far between. Then one day there is a hint of light as she learns that she will be inheriting from another uncle of hers. But she can only touch that money if she is married before her majority which is fast approaching. A man is interested in her and when she finally meets him she sees that he is quite handsome. But after a couple encounters with the Duke of Preston she finds herself attracted to him. As she experiences things of her future betrothed that she doesn't completely like, will she choose to stand up for herself and what she really wants? What does she want more freedom from her life where she is virtually a slave or a chance at a marriage of love? This is a very well written take on a Cinderella story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This is the second book I have read by Elizabeth Boyle and will likely read more in the future.
My Musings
It has been a while since I have read a book by Elizabeth Boyle. I am so glad I picked Along Came a Duke to re-enter Ms. Boyle’s amazing writing world. I thoroughly enjoyed being transported back to Regency England in this wonderful story. Elizabeth Boyle does not disappoint!
This is a fast-paced romance from start to finish. In fact, while listening to it, I had a difficult time stopping to take care of mundane tasks. This book has a sweetly developing love story, yet Ms. Boyle kept it going with excellent sexual tension, one of the things I love most about historical romances.
Tabitha Timmons is a wonderful heroine. With just the right amount of spunky kid rolled into the waif character arch. While this starts out as a Cinderella story, it is much more than that. I loved the heroine’s lively spirit and saucy tongue when dealing with the bad boy duke.
At first, I didn’t think I would like the Duke of Preston’s character. He is a bit brash in the beginning and Ms. Boyle paints his character as an uncaring, notorious rake to such a point that he is no longer received by polite society. As the story unfolds, his back story pulled at my heart, and had me misty-eyed for the sad young boy he must have been. His need to always have company when he dines shows his vulnerable side.
Since I listened to the audio version, I want to mention the narration by Susan Duerden. She does an outstanding job giving all the characters distinctive voices, from the heroine to the servants. It was easy to figure out who was speaking. Unfortunately, I struggled while listening to the narrative portion of the book. Ms. Duerden has a bit of a sing-song tone to her voice. However, that is not present during the dialogue.
I always love a traditional Regency romance with the added benefit of the slow burn of sexual tension building to the actually love scene. If you enjoy historical romances, then Along Came a Duke is sure to please. I know I found it completely satisfying. Happy reading!
